As we have ISO (International Organization of Standardization) regulating the standardization and quality maintenance at international level, the BIS is national standard body regulated under the BIS Act 1986 which is engaged in development and promotion of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and issues the guidelines basis which BIS conducts its Inspection procedure to issue license accordingly. It inspects the goods by procuring the sample through BIS inspectors according to the defined procedure and after a due inspection in the recognized laboratory of BIS; the label is issued by BIS. All the manufacturers whether Indian and Foreigner are required to obtain BIS Certification.
Application for registration shall be made in Form VI along with the self-evaluation cum declaration as specified in Form VII; and test report of the sample.
The laboratory should be recognized by the Bureau or any laboratory abroad for which mutual recognization certificate has been signed with the Bureau. The test report so furnished should be off within the period of ninety days as on the date of submission of application with Bureau.
CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme):
CRS is the scheme whereby certain lists of items specified are required to be compulsorily registered with BIS and get checked their products tested in the labs of BIS.
Functions of BIS:
BIS is engaged in providing the testing facilities, regulate and provide recognized Laboratories, Conduct product testing, Issue list products that required to obtain the license, provide information, documentation to consumers and recognized consumer organizations, formulate, implement and coordinate activities for maintenance and improvement in products and processes; Promote standardization, quality systems and certification at international level and such other advertisement activities.
Renewal: An application in Form IX is to be made one month before the expiry.
Note: After approval, the Manufacturer is allowed to indicate on its product statements like “This product is in conformity with the ISO”.
